Definition of Success
I have been involved in many conversations surrounding the word “success” and the measurements used to determine if an individual has reached his or her destination of becoming successful. According to Merriam-Webster success can be defined as the following:
A. Degree or measure of succeeding
B. Favorable or desired outcome; also the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.
Most people agree being successful can be multidimensional and include internal factors such as emotional wellness, positive self-image, and a strong sense of identity. Within the Hand Made Dreams community, we are dedicated to facilitating a dialogue which helps our young ladies create their own measurements of success which includes a balance of emotional wellness, in addition to nutritional and physical health. As adults, it is vital for us to create a safe place (no judgment zone 🚨) and to practice our active listening skills to fully maximize their ability to be completely transparent.
Along with success, vulnerability is key. I have participated in multiple sessions where vulnerability actually led to the breakthrough needed to create the building blocks for success. Suppressing various childhood memories, trauma, and loss can all create barriers which prevent us from moving forward.
Even within my own life journey, the best opportunities for growth came during a time of vulnerability. According to Brené Brown, what we know matters but who we are matters more.
In summary, as adults/parents we can move forward with the following:
1. Create a safe space (no judgment zone).
2. Encourage exploration (meaning of success).
3. Promote vulnerability (breakdown the exterior).
